Rare Earth Minerals Found in MP Coalfields – All You Need to KnowIn a major development, rare earth minerals have been discovered in the Singrauli coalfields of Madhya Pradesh, Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy said in Rajya Sabha.
Rare earth minerals are critical in various sectors, including clean energy, electronics, defence, and electric vehicles, and are currently imported from China, which has tightened its export controls.
Coal India Ltd (CIL) is conducting R&D initiatives to assess the potential for extracting rare earth elements (REEs) from coal mine waste and overburden. Initial findings from the Gondwana sediments in Singrauli indicate promising REE enrichment—ranging from 250 ppm in coal samples to 400 ppm in non-coal samples.
“Economic extraction will depend on technological advancement and economies of scale,” said Reddy, while stressing that the goal is to develop indigenous technology.
